Threads Mother: Red/Wool

Threads: Mother / Father / Lover is a triptych short inspired by the poem Threads written by Echo Collins-Egan that describes the intricate nature and complexity of relationships with the three prominent figures in her life father, mother, lover and the intimate connections she weaves with each of them. The choices of threads vary in colour and thickness they unravel, fray, knot and tangle depending on the nature of the relationship they represent.

Threads

by Echo Collins - Egan.

What thread connects us?

My mother's and mine,

its red, blood red,

a wool vein

that stretches wherever she may go.

To warm me in my winters

and sometimes, too hot in my summers.

A thread choked with life force.

Threads: Father/Purple

Dad's is purple,

gossamer, subtle, uncomfortably knotted, beautiful.

A thread from Kilburn to wherever I may be.

I'm scared of pulling on that one.

These threads, they stretch

from heart string to heart string.

Pulling and dancing and making this, my world,

into an intricately woven circle.

Every human,

New ones,

breaking ones.

Death incapable of unsowing, destroying

making them ghostly connections

to our pasts.

Threads/Lover: Black & Gold Silk.

Costume designs by Eleni Paul.

And what is our thread like?

It's silk,

gold black gold black,

woven from our light and our darkness.

Close to breaking sometimes,

moments about to snap,

I've tried to cut it sometimes when the pull is too hard,

too painful,

when we're not pulling simultaneously.

When you're close,

our thread, it tightens round my breath, and my heart.

And its too late, our thread is woven.

Maybe it'll slacken someday

But then a little ache,

A gentle tug of longing when your face appears on a stranger.
